The retail skew and the rate
What this is
The blue area is retail traders' net skew in the perpetual future: how far buying outweighs selling, as a percentage of open interest. The line is the currency's rate against the rouble.
What it shows
How retail positioning lines up with the actual rate. If the skew reaches the edges of its range and the rate then turns, retail is systematically on the wrong side of the move.

How to read this

A zero-sum game

Every future is a deal between a buyer and a seller. If retail is long, the other side is held by banks, exporters and funds. The two sides are always equal in size.

The skew is not a trade signal

A strong one-sided retail skew reflects sentiment but does not set the turning point: a skew can persist for months.

What else moves the rate

Positioning is only one factor. The CBR rate, funding cost and the tax period affect the rouble more.
